Dr Sushama Deshpande is an Australian trained Interventional Pain Specialist and Anaesthetist.
She currently holds a clinical appointment at Nepean Hospital – Penrith, as well as specialist appointments at Macquarie University Hospital, Nepean Private Hospital, and Norwest Private Hospital.
Dr Deshpande completed her anaesthesia training at KEM Hospital, Mumbai and at St George Hospital, Kogarah, NSW. She also completed a fellowship in obstetric anaesthesia at the Mercy Hospital for Women, Melbourne. After receiving her anaesthesia fellowship, she subsequently completed subspeciality training in Pain Medicine at the Nepean Hospital Pain unit, under the guidance of Professor Raj Sundaraj in 2010. In 2017, Dr Deshpande completed a clinical observership at Sloan Memorial Kettering Hospital, New York, to further advance her knowledge and skills in the cancer pain speciality.
Dr Deshpande has a keen interest in complex regional pain syndrome, cancer pain and pelvic pain, and focuses her anaesthesia work in neurosurgical, orthopaedic, and regional anaesthesia.
Dr Deshpande is highly trained and skilled in performing interventional pain procedures including radiofrequency ablation, regional blocks, neuromodulation and intrathecal implants and is passionate about combining these with a multidisciplinary treatment approach, to enhance the quality of pain management.
Dr Deshpande is determined to give back to the community, through providing her services and expanding her involvement in patient and physician education and support.
She is a supervisor of trainee for both Pain and Anaesthesiology, and often leads both patient education seminars and multidisciplinary education seminars for physicians.
She also contributes to the acute pain services and chronic pain services at Nepean hospital, and works closely with the palliative care unit, cancer care, and drug and addiction specialists.
Dr Deshpande believes in the importance of expanding the availability of pain management services in regional NSW, and provides patients care in the Central West and Southern Highland areas of NSW.
